Arvind Kejriwal is Delhi’s most famous Kejriwal and had eggs thrown at him early on in his political career. But that’s not the Eggs Kejriwal we’re talking about here. This dish was invented at the Willingdon Sports Club at Tardeo in Mumbai. A certain Mr. Devi Prasad Kejriwal was a very regular visitor to the Willingdon Sports Club. Kejriwals like Aggarwals are a strictly vegetarian community and non vegetarian dishes of all kinds including eggs are frowned upon.
Devi Prasad Kejriwal loved fried egg and got the chefs at the Willingdon Sports Club to make his favourite dish. Fried eggs on toast with cheese thrown in between and a healthy sprinkling of chopped green chillies on top.
He’s believed to have this dish every day. The popularity the the dish grew among his friends and then later the other club members got to know about this. At some point, the dish got added to the Club’s menu and has been part of it ever since. I had the Kejriwal at Willingdon Sport Club recently and they had overcooked the fried eggs. I doubt if Devi Prasad Kejriwal would’ve allowed that. The fun in fried eggs is when the yolks are runny. I think there should be legislation ensuring over easy eggs as the only way to fry eggs for the Kejriwal. We shall discuss the Alti-Palti in another post.
The dish has also been part of the menus at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) and The Bombay Yacht Club. I’m unsure if this was also Devi Prasad Kejriwal’s doing or cooks hopping jobs and recreating their favourite dishes. The dish has now found its way into restaurant menus in India and abroad. Bombay Canteen does their own version of the dish which I remember Chef Floyd had introduced, and I’d added the Kejriwal in the menu at SodaBottleOpenerWala, Gurgaon way back in 2015. I was incharge of the brand at that time. The Aam Adam Party and Arvind Kejriwal were at its peak and we got some good buzz around the dish.
Happy hunting and chowder-on!
